A cut stepped into terraces like this one is typical of the Panama Canal's Culebra Cut, the ridge that crews had to slice through to connect the Atlantic and Pacific. Roosevelt's presidency, from 1901 to 1909, covered the most intensive years of that work, and in 1906 he became the first sitting president to travel outside the country when he toured the isthmus. The benches let steam shovels and rail cars work at several levels at once, which is worth noticing in a panoramic view that shows how much earth was moved by hand and machine. The gallery files it under Roosevelt because the canal was his project.
