The Culebra Cut, the deep channel slicing through the Continental Divide on the Panama Canal route, is the feature this panorama sets out to show, and its sheer scale is the point. Theodore Roosevelt visited the isthmus in November 1906, becoming the first sitting U.S. president to leave the country while in office, and he pushed hard for the canal's completion. The American effort, which took over the French company's stalled work in 1904, dug through the ridge of rock and soil with steam shovels, drills and dynamite, and the cut was among the most difficult stretches of the entire project.
