The Culebra Cut, the deep excavation through the Continental Divide that let ships pass from the Atlantic to the Pacific, is the setting here, and this panoramic view shows how much rock had to be removed to carve it. Theodore Roosevelt, who took office in 1901, pushed the canal project forward after the French effort had failed, and the work at Culebra was the most grueling stretch of the entire build. Crews relied on steam shovels, dynamite and rail cars to haul out earth and stone over the years of construction that ended in 1914. The scale of the cut in a panoramic format makes the engineering achievement easy to grasp.
