Pedro Miguel Lock sits on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal, where it lowers ships about 31 feet toward Miraflores Lake on their way to the sea. Theodore Roosevelt championed the American canal project during his presidency from 1901 to 1909, and his administration oversaw its early construction. American engineers completed the work, and the canal opened to shipping in August 1914, five years after Roosevelt left office. This wide panoramic view shows how the lock fits into the surrounding hillsides and channel.
