The Gatun Locks, a flight of three massive concrete lock chambers that lift and lower ships about 85 feet between the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal and Gatun Lake, were among the most ambitious engineering works of the canal project. This panoramic view records the site during construction, when the lock walls were rising and the scale of the excavation and concrete work was visible across the whole frame. The canal was pursued under Theodore Roosevelt, who pushed the project forward after the United States took over the French effort in 1904, and the locks completed in 1913 are a lasting symbol of his presidency.
