The Gatun Locks, on the Panama Canal, are a flight of three locks that lift ships roughly 85 feet from the Atlantic side up to Gatun Lake, a man-made reservoir formed by damming the Chagres River. This panoramic view shows the upper level of the locks, the stretch that made the canal possible in its early decades. The canal was built under the American administration of Theodore Roosevelt, who pushed the project forward after France's earlier effort had failed, and Gatun was the largest of the lock complexes his engineers constructed. The gallery links it to Roosevelt because his presidency shaped the canal's construction.
