The Gatun Locks, a flight of three steps that lift ships roughly 85 feet from the Atlantic side up to Gatun Lake, form the centerpiece of this panoramic view of the Panama Canal. Theodore Roosevelt, who took office in 1901 and pushed the canal project forward as one of his signature achievements, saw the work through construction years that ended with the waterway opening in 1914. The wide format captures the scale of the engineering, with the lock walls and the surrounding works laid out across the frame. Roosevelt's personal stake in the project explains why images like this one circulated so widely in his era.
