The Gatun Locks, on the Panama Canal's Atlantic side, lift and lower ships across the roughly 85-foot difference between the canal and the Caribbean. This panoramic view looks along the north approach, where vessels waited and entered the flight of chambers that the United States built during the canal's construction. The board places it under Theodore Roosevelt, the president who pushed the canal project forward after 1904 and whose administration oversaw much of the digging and engineering work. Panoramic views like this one were a common way to show the scale of such an undertaking to a public that could not visit the isthmus.
