The Gatun Locks, a flight of three lift locks that raise and lower ships about 85 feet between the Atlantic and Gatun Lake, are the focus of this wide view of the Panama Canal. Construction of the canal was pushed forward during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, and the project he championed opened to shipping in 1914, a few years after he left office. Worth noticing in a panorama like this is the scale of the concrete work and the lake it feeds, which together made the canal one of the largest engineering undertakings of its era.
