The Panama Canal locks at Gatun, shown here in a wide panoramic view while still under construction, belong to the years when the United States was digging the waterway across the Isthmus of Panama. Theodore Roosevelt pushed the project forward after taking office in 1901, and his administration oversaw much of the excavation and concrete work that turned the isthmus into a shipping route. Panoramic views like this one were popular at the time because they conveyed the enormous scale of the engineering effort, with crews, rail lines and massive structures spread across a single frame. The canal opened to traffic in 1914.
