Yosemite Valley's granite walls rise above a single tall pine standing on the valley floor, the kind of lone tree that Carleton Watkins and other early photographers made a signature of their Yosemite views. Albumen prints like this one were the standard way to reproduce such scenes in the 1860s and 1870s, when the valley was newly set aside by Congress as a protected grant and few Americans had seen it firsthand. Pictures of this kind helped shape the public image of the valley as a natural wonder worth preserving. Look closely at the scale: the tree is small against the cliffs, which was part of the point.
