Yosemite Valley in 1915 is the setting here, a view of the valley floor that visitors of the period would have recognized from the postcards and guidebooks already circulating about the park. The valley had been set aside as a state grant in 1864 and folded into Yosemite National Park in 1906, so by the time this was taken the place was drawing a steady stream of tourists by rail and stagecoach. Photographs like this one helped build the park's reputation and shaped how Americans pictured the Sierra Nevada wilderness.
