Half Dome rises more than 4,700 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley, and its sheer northwest face is the feature that makes it so recognizable in landscape pictures. Photographers have been drawn to the granite monolith since the valley opened to tourists in the 1850s, when the rock was still considered nearly unclimbable. Its profile, with the smooth dome split down one side, was shaped by glacial erosion and exfoliation over millions of years. Yosemite became a federal grant in 1864 under Abraham Lincoln, and views like this one helped build the case for preserving the valley.
