Mirror Lake sits at the foot of Half Dome in Yosemite Valley, a shallow pool that in spring and early summer often reflects the granite face so cleanly that the lake seems to double the mountain. Yosemite was set aside by Congress in 1864 as a grant to the state of California, one of the first times the federal government protected scenery for public use, and artists and photographers who came to the valley in the decades after were drawn to views like this one. Pictures of Mirror Lake from that era show how the valley was being framed for visitors, with its reflections and calm water treated as the essence of the landscape. The lake shrinks each year as sediment builds up, so the scene in this print is also a record of a view that has changed.
