Mirror Lake sits in a shallow glacial basin at the foot of Half Dome, and on calm mornings its still water doubles the granite face above it. The lake is smaller than it once was, since sediment from Tenaya Creek has filled it in over the decades, so today it is often more meadow than pool, especially late in the season. Yosemite Valley drew painters and photographers throughout the nineteenth century, and this spot became one of the most reproduced views in the park, shaping how many visitors imagined the valley long before they arrived.
