Mirror Lake sits in a narrow side valley at the foot of Half Dome and the Royal Arches, and this engraving shows it as a still sheet of water holding the granite cliffs upside down. The image was cut in steel by S.V. Hunt from a painting by Harry Fenn, and it appeared in the first volume of *Picturesque America*, a lavishly illustrated survey of the nation's scenery edited by poet William Cullen Bryant. Fenn, who traveled to Yosemite to sketch the valley, helped make such views familiar to readers in the years after the valley was set aside as a state grant in 1864.
