Mirror Lake sits at the foot of Half Dome in Yosemite Valley, where a shallow pool reflects the granite face on calm days, especially in spring and early summer. The lake is a seasonal feature: as snowmelt slows through late summer, it shrinks to a meadow, which is why photographers have long prized the early months. Yosemite's valley was set aside by Congress in 1864 as one of the first places protected for public use, and views like this one helped build the case for preserving the wider region as a national park.
