Mirror Lake is a shallow pool at the foot of Half Dome in Yosemite Valley, and this winter view records a stretch of it frozen over enough for skaters. The lake is fed by seasonal runoff and often shrinks to a meadow by late summer, so the winter scene shows it at a different scale than most visitors saw it. The photograph was copyrighted by J.T. Boysen, a photographer who sold Yosemite views to tourists, and images like this helped shape how the valley was pictured in the early 20th century.
