Mirror Lake is a small, shallow pool at the foot of Half Dome, and its still surface is what gives this stereograph its name and much of its appeal. Carleton Watkins, the photographer most associated with early Yosemite views, made his large-format negatives of the valley in the 1860s and 1870s, and this card belongs to the New Series of Pacific Coast Views that Watkins sold in stereo format. Published by William I. Marshall, it reflects how the valley's scenery reached parlors across the country as a popular way to see the West without travelling there.
