The Sentinel, a sheer granite face rising above Yosemite Valley, gives this view its name and its sense of height, set off by a still lake and trees in the foreground. Pictures like this were made around 1860, when the valley was reachable only by rough trail and few Americans had seen it. Photographers who hauled heavy glass-plate cameras into the valley helped convince the public and Congress that the scenery deserved protection, which led to the 1864 grant setting the valley aside for public use.
