A lone man sits beneath a rock formation near the Upper Yosemite Fall, and his small figure makes the surrounding granite and falling water look even larger. The picture dates to about 1860, a few years before Congress granted the Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Big Trees to California in 1864. It reflects the early period when photographers hauled heavy wet-plate equipment into the valley. Views like this helped convince eastern audiences that the place was extraordinary and worth protecting. The record does not identify the man, so he serves mainly as a measure of the scale of the cliffs above him.
