Bridalveil Fall is one of the first waterfalls in Yosemite that a visitor sees on entering the valley, and this view, taken from the Cathedral Trail, shows it from a vantage point that few early photographers bothered to reach. The record dates the print to about 1860, a period when Yosemite was newly known to outsiders and photographers were carrying heavy glass-plate equipment up the valley's rough trails. Images like this helped convince a skeptical public that the valley's cliffs and falls were real, and they later supported the case for setting the area aside as a protected park. The print is worth studying for the way the falling water is set against the granite walls.
