Bridalveil Fall, which drops beside the Yosemite Valley wall, was among the first Sierra Nevada scenes that photographers carried back to the eastern United States. Its thin ribbon of water, blown sideways by the wind, gave the fall its name and made it a favorite subject for early camera crews working in the valley. Around 1860, few Americans had seen the place firsthand, so pictures like this one did much of the work of introducing it to the public. Yosemite was not yet a protected park, and the print offers a record of the valley before roads and hotels changed its look.
