Vernal Fall, a cascade of about 317 feet on the Merced River, is the subject here, and the photographer chose a view that shows its full drop against the surrounding rock. This albumen print dates to around 1860, before Abraham Lincoln signed the 1864 grant that set aside Yosemite Valley for public use, when the valley was still little known outside California. Albumen prints, made by coating paper with egg white and silver salts, were the standard for landscape photography of the period and give such images their fine detail and warm tone. The print was later shown in the exhibition *Expanding Horizons* at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
