Trees and a small cabin stand in the foreground here, with Yosemite Falls rising behind them, a pairing that shows how settlers and the falls shared the valley floor. Yosemite Falls drops roughly 2,400 feet in total, and photographers working in the valley around 1860 were among the first to bring scenes like this to eastern audiences. Views of this kind were part of the public case for protecting the valley, which Congress granted to California as a public trust in 1864 and which later became part of the national park system.
