A creek tumbling over boulders in Yosemite Valley is the subject here, a quieter view than the granite cliffs and waterfalls that drew most early photographers. Pictures like this date from about 1860, several years before Lincoln signed the 1864 grant that set aside the valley for public use. Scenes of the valley were sold to eastern audiences curious about the Far West, and the wet-plate process of the period demanded heavy equipment and long exposures, which makes a sharp, detailed study of rock and water worth a closer look.
