A small pond sits at the foot of a granite cliff in this view, a quiet counterpoint to the towering walls that drew most early visitors to Yosemite Valley. Around 1860 the valley was remote, reached by rough trails and horseback, and photographers who made the journey hauled heavy glass-plate cameras to record its falls and cliffs. Their views were often printed as albumen prints and circulated to a public that had little other way to see the place. The record does not name the photographer, but the image reflects the period when Yosemite was first being documented for a national audience.
