Trees stand in the foreground of this view of North Dome, the rounded granite mass that rises above the northeast end of Yosemite Valley. Around 1860 the valley was still new to most Americans, and photographers who reached it had to haul heavy glass-plate equipment over rough trails. Images like this one helped build public interest in the valley's scenery, which contributed to the 1864 act that granted Yosemite to California for preservation. Notice how the dark trunks and branches set off the pale dome and give the eye a sense of scale.
