Few formations in Yosemite are as recognizable as Half Dome, the granite monolith whose sheer northern face rises roughly 4,800 feet above the valley floor. This c1922 view dates from more than three decades after Congress established Yosemite National Park in 1890, when the valley was becoming a major destination for visitors. The photograph was copyrighted by A.J. Baker, whose registration with the U.S. Copyright Office preserves a dated record of the image. Landscape views like this one helped shape the public's image of Yosemite as a symbol of the American wilderness.
