Half Dome rises above the valley floor in this view, its sheer granite face cut clean on one side in a way that made it one of the most recognized forms in the Sierra Nevada. Yosemite was set aside by Congress in 1864 as a public trust for preservation, and photographers working in the valley during the 1860s, including Carleton Watkins, carried heavy glass-plate cameras up the trails to record its cliffs and waterfalls. Albumen prints like this one, made from paper coated with egg white and silver salts, were the standard way such views reached eastern audiences, where they helped build support for protecting the valley.
