Sheer granite walls rise on either side of the Gate of the Valley, the narrow opening where the Merced River enters Yosemite Valley from the east. El Capitan stands on one side and Cathedral Rocks on the other, and the approach pulls the eye straight into the valley beyond. The print's copyright deposit notation suggests it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office around 1927, when the park drew steady numbers of visitors by automobile and postcard and scenic views like this were widely circulated.
