Yosemite's valley roads are the subject of the 2001 Valley Roads Plan, a planning effort to manage the traffic that winds across the valley floor beneath granite landmarks such as El Capitan and Half Dome. Car congestion had grown alongside visitation, and planners weighed how roads, parking and shuttles might be rearranged to reduce gridlock and give meadows and the Merced River corridor more room. The roadway itself is worth noticing, since it threads through the valley's open meadows and links them to the cliffs that draw visitors in.
