This bird's-eye map shows Yosemite's road network as a viewer would have seen it from above, with the valley floor, surrounding granite walls, and the routes that carried visitors in. Maps in this style were popular in the early twentieth century, when park promotion and the growth of automobile travel made it important for visitors to understand how to reach and move around the park. Yosemite became a national park in 1890, and its roads, including the routes into the valley and across the high country, shaped how most people experienced its waterfalls and meadows. Notice how the map blends a pictorial landscape with practical route information.
