Roads and bridges are the thread running through this view of Yosemite, a reminder that the park's famous valleys were opened to ordinary visitors only after crews cut routes through steep granite country. Early Yosemite was hard to reach, and the stagecoach and wagon roads that eventually wound into the valley shaped how travelers first saw its waterfalls and cliffs. Yosemite became a national park in 1890, and much of the road building that followed was aimed at making the scenery accessible to the growing number of tourists arriving by rail and automobile. Look at how the road and bridge fit into the landscape, since the engineering was as much a part of the park's story as the rock formations themselves.
