Yosemite's roads were among the earliest tools for bringing visitors into the valley, and this view of a roadside landscape shows how the route was carved into the mountain country around it. Early park roads were built with hand labor and horse-drawn equipment, so their curves often followed the natural lay of the land rather than cutting straight through it. The road seen here reflects the park's early push to make its scenery reachable by automobile, a change that reshaped how millions of people experienced the Sierra Nevada. Look closely at the edges of the road and the rock beside it, where the engineering and the wild terrain meet.
