Low guard walls like these line the curves of Yosemite's park roads, placed to keep vehicles from going over the edge where the grade drops toward the valley floor. Roadbuilders in the early twentieth century often used local stone and hand-laid masonry so these structures would blend into the granite landscape, reflecting the rustic style the National Park Service favored. Road work in the park expanded after the Park Service was created in 1916, and such walls remain a practical reminder of the effort to make mountain travel safer while keeping it in step with the scenery.
