Rather than a single scene, this map traces how the roads and bridges of Yosemite were laid out from the earliest routes of 1874 to the present day. Early wagon roads carried visitors up from the Central Valley, and the network expanded after Congress granted the valley to California in 1864 and after it became a national park in 1890. Comparing the first alignments with the modern system shows how granite walls, steep grades, and river crossings shaped where builders could go.
