The map centers on the Big Oak Flat Road, the wagon route that brought visitors into Yosemite Valley from the west, and the 1874 date in its title marks the road's opening as a toll road. Its later date, 1940, suggests the illustration was revised or reissued long after the road was built, a period when automobiles were reshaping how people reached the park. The road's path roughly follows today's Highway 120 through the Big Oak Flat Entrance, so the drawing shows an early approach to the valley that many travelers still use.
