Coulterville Road is one of the old routes that carried travelers up the western slope into Yosemite Valley, and this view from 1874 shows the road as it looked in the years before the valley was widely visited. Wagon and stagecoach traffic on these early roads was slow and rough, and the grades and washouts that riders faced are part of what makes such scenes worth a closer look. The valley had been set aside as a state grant in 1864, and roads like this one were the main way most visitors reached it through the 1870s. Notice how narrow and unpaved the track appears, a reminder of how much work went into opening the high country to tourists.
