The Big Oak Flat Road tunnels are the detail that sets this view apart: a carriage road cut through solid granite on the way into Yosemite Valley from the west. The route was built in the 1870s to replace a slower, more dangerous approach, and its tunnels let stagecoaches and wagons pass through rock instead of climbing over it. Visitors who arrived this way often remarked on the brief darkness and sudden reveal of the valley beyond. Pictures of the tunnels are useful today for seeing how early engineers worked with hand tools and blasting powder in steep, remote country.
