Glacier Point Road, as it stood in 1882, shows the rough route that carried visitors up from the Yosemite Valley floor toward one of the most celebrated overlooks in the park. In those years the road was a difficult climb, cut into steep granite slopes and built for horses and wagons rather than automobiles. Travel was slow, and the trip was part of the appeal, since the view from Glacier Point over the valley to Half Dome was something tourists in the late nineteenth century went to great lengths to reach.
