Yosemite Falls, seen from the high vantage of Glacier Point, is the focus of this 1879 stereograph, which shows the valley's most famous waterfall from above rather than the usual view from the valley floor. Carleton Watkins made the negative, and this card belongs to his New Series of Pacific Coast Views, which was issued by the publisher William I. Marshall. Stereoviews like this were sold in large numbers to parlors across the United States, letting viewers feel they were standing on the rim of the valley. Their pairing of two slightly offset images through a viewer gave the cliffs and falls a convincing sense of depth.
