Taken from Union Point, this stereograph frames Yosemite Falls from a vantage that few visitors of the 1870s could easily reach, with the falls set against the valley's granite walls. The card belongs to the Watkins New Series of Pacific Coast Views, a set of stereoscopic images that Carleton Watkins made of the West and that William I. Marshall published and sold. Yosemite was among the most popular subjects for such cards, since many Americans who would never see the valley in person could view its waterfalls and cliffs in three dimensions in their own parlors.
