Few vantage points in the Sierra Nevada match the view from Glacier Point, a granite promontory roughly 3,000 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley, and this card frames Yosemite Fall from that height. Published by William Isaac Marshall as No. 1175 in his California series of Yosemite views, the stereograph was meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the falls and cliffs a three-dimensional depth that suited the parlor-entertainment market of the day. Cards like this carried the valley's scenery to viewers who would never make the trip west, and they helped build the reputation that led to Yosemite's protection as a national park in 1890.
