El Portal Road is the highway that ran from the town of El Portal, on the Merced River just outside Yosemite's western boundary, up into the park's valley, and it earned its nickname because it stayed open when other routes were buried in snow. Before it was built, visitors reached Yosemite Valley by stagecoach over mountain grades that closed for much of the winter. The road gave the park a year-round link to the outside world and changed how many people experienced the valley, so it is worth looking closely at how it was cut into the steep canyon walls.
