Few roads in the Sierra Nevada have as layered a history as the Tioga Road, shown here on a map that carries two dates, 1883 and 1961. The first stretch was built in the early 1880s as the Great Sierra Mining Road, a route for hauling ore and supplies between the mining camps on the high east side of the range and the lowlands beyond. When the road later became part of Yosemite's network of park roads, it opened the high country to visitors who had previously needed days of hard travel to reach it. The 1961 date points to a later rebuilding, a reminder that the route has been reworked many times since its first grading.
