The view looks down on Yosemite Valley from the Oak Flat grade, a steep road climb where horse-drawn coaches labored up from the valley floor. Around 1902, the valley drew a steady stream of tourists, and the stagecoach was still the main way to reach the rim before automobiles reached the park. The print is credited to Boysen, a Yosemite-area photographer who sold views of the valley and its roads to visitors. Its subjects, the carriages and the road cut into the slope, show how travelers once moved through the park's dramatic terrain.
