Cathedral Rock, a granite spire on the south side of Yosemite Valley, anchors this view with its sheer, towering face. Views like this were made in the mid-1860s, just after Congress set aside the valley and the Mariposa Grove of big trees for public use and protection in 1864. Large mammoth-plate negatives printed on albumen paper captured fine tonal detail, which helped audiences far from California grasp the scale of the landscape. The "No. 2" notation suggests the picture was one of a numbered sequence of views.
