Artists' Point, the overlook above the valley floor, is the vantage this print records, and it was one of the most photographed views in Yosemite by the late 1890s. The image was produced by the Detroit Publishing Company using the photochrom process, a Swiss method that layered several hand-prepared stone or metal plates to give a photograph soft, painterly color. Deposited for copyright under catalog number 50127, it reflects how railroad travel and the company's tourist trade helped spread images of the national park to viewers who would never see the valley themselves.
