Cathedral Rock, the granite spire on the south side of Yosemite Valley, sets this view apart from the valley's more familiar waterfalls and domes. The print dates to about 1865, a year after Congress and President Lincoln granted the valley and the Mariposa Grove to California for protection, which helped draw photographers and visitors there. It was made as an albumen print from a large glass negative, a process that gave landscape views of the period their fine detail and warm tone. The "No. 2" notation suggests it was one of a numbered series.
